While there has been growth in the percentage of exchanges for smaller implants, approximately half of these procedures are for the same size, and between 35–40% go bigger.
There are several possible explanations for this shift, and not all of them are rooted in cultural beauty standards. Breast reductions, for example, are generally sought out by women experiencing back pain more so than pursuing strictly cosmetic goals. And while most patients don't experience complications from their breast implants, a small percentage do, which is likely the impetus behind some breast implant removal procedures.
