U.S. Cities Most Interested In 5 Popular Cosmetic Procedures

When it comes to plastic surgery, you might think everyone in cities like New York or Los Angeles has considered a cosmetic procedure or two.

By volume, these mega metropolises do have the greatest demand and number of procedures performed annually. But when accounting for population size relative to average interest per resident, surprising trends emerged.

Bliss Aesthetics analyzed Google Search trends and volumes for 5 popular cosmetic procedures and found that for some procedure types, the most interest came from smaller and mid-sized cities.

BBL — District of Columbia (Washington D.C.)

You were expecting Miami, weren’t you?

Miami surgeons perform the most Brazilian butt lifts (BBLs) by sheer volume, pun fully intended. But Google search trend data suggests that the nation’s capital takes the cake when it comes to the percentage of D.C.’s population interested in the buttocks enhancement procedure.

BBLs seemed to have piqued Washingtonian’s attention starting in early 2021, peaking in July and December of that year. That same year, D.C. eclipsed Atlanta, Georgia, as the city most interested in sculpted behinds.

While D.C. and Atlanta turned heads for the top spot, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Houston, Texas, weren’t far behind— and maintained the most consistent interest in BBLs over the last 5 years.

Breast Augmentation — Salt Lake City, Utah

Though you might expect that Sin City might also lead in interest for breast implants — and that holds true when looking at a 5-year retrospective view. However, starting in 2023, the residents of Salt Lake City, Utah, began eclipsing Las Vegas on most searches per capita for the terms “breast augmentation” and “boob job.”

Salt Lake City has a high density of plastic surgeons relative to its population size. WebMD has more than 400 in its directory for SLC, a city of just over 200,000 people. That’s about one plastic surgeon for every 500 SLC residents.

Meanwhile, Las Vegas, a city with a population of more than 650,000, only lists 119, or approximately one plastic surgeon per 5,500 residents.

There may be a relationship in the two cities' high search volumes: Salt Lake City is less than a 6-hour drive from Las Vegas. Not to mention, the route between the two cities goes through some of the country’s most stunning natural landscapes, like Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon. Road trip?

Rhinoplasty (Nose Reshaping) — Los Angeles/Beverly Hills, California and Syracuse, New York

Alright, no big surprises here, and of course Los Angeles made this list for something. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 330,000 nose jobs are performed annually in the United States.

Home to Hollywood, shimmering coastlines, and more than 260 days of sunshine per year on average, the City of Angels not only has the highest number of rhinoplasties by volume, but also the largest percentage of interested citizens.

Specifically, Beverly Hills residents have the highest concentration of searches related to the procedure. The whole of Southern California seems to be keen on having the perfect nose: The per-capita search volume related to rhinoplasties procedures is significantly above the national average in Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Palm Springs.

Close behind, New Yorkers are also clocking a high volume of Google searches for nose reshaping. While New York City is well represented in that trend, a larger percentage of residents in the small, upstate New York college city of Syracuse out searched the Big Apple for this popular facial procedure.

Tummy Tuck — Greenwood, Mississippi

Tummy tucks remove unwanted fat as well as excess skin folds. They are commonly sought out by people who have lost a significant amount of weight or after pregnancy. Tummy tucks have the most search interest per capita in Greenwood, Mississippi and Alexandria, Louisiana.

Liposuction, the tummy tuck’s predecessor and the most common type of plastic surgery, removes excess fat from various areas in the body. It is commonly performed in conjunction with other procedure types, including fat transfer to other areas of the body such as the breasts.

According to a report by the Aesthetics Society surveying more than 200 providers across the U.S., more than 400,000 people underwent a liposuction procedure in 2022, and another 200,000 had tummy tucks performed.

Miami leads the nation in per-capita search volume for liposuction and by a fairly wide margin. Not all that surprising considering it’s always beach season in the Magic City.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) — Honolulu, Hawaii and Boise, Idaho

Blepharoplasty is a less common procedure that tightens the skin around the eyes, making them appear bigger, brighter, and more youthful. Less common than other procedures on this list, blepharoplasties experienced a spike in popularity in 2021 which remained elevated in 2022.

Honolulu, Hawaii has held onto the top spot for highest percentage of residents researching “eyelid surgery” for the past 5 years and retains the title today. Santa Barbara, and San Diego, California were close behind.

However, over the last year, searches for “eyelid surgery” have been on the rise among residents of Boise, Idaho. Eclipsing the coastal California cities, Boiseans have tied Honolulu for the most per-capita searches over the last 12 months.

According to the Aesthetics Society, blepharoplasties were the most popular cosmetic procedure for patients over the age of 70 in 2022.
